A Red kangaroo eating grass. This is called grazing!

A grazer is an animal that mostly eats grass. Think of it like a lawnmower, but alive! Grazers are usually herbivores, meaning they only eat plants. They are different from animals called browsers, which prefer to eat leaves, twigs, and bark from trees and shrubs.

What Makes a Grazer Special?

Grazers have amazing bodies that help them eat and digest grass. Grass can be tough to chew and get nutrients from. Because of this, grazers have special teeth and a unique digestive system.

Teeth for Chewing Grass

Grazers often have flat, strong teeth. These teeth are perfect for grinding down tough grass. Imagine trying to chew a big salad with only your front teeth – it would be hard! Grazers have back teeth that are wide and flat, like millstones, to really mash up the grass.

Digestive Systems for Tough Plants

Eating grass is not like eating fruit. Grass has a lot of cellulose, which is a tough fiber. To break this down, many grazers have special stomachs or long intestines. For example, Ruminants like cows have four stomach compartments. They chew their food, swallow it, and then bring it back up to chew it again! This helps them get all the goodness from the grass.

Different Kinds of Grazers

Many different animals are grazers. Some of the most famous ones are:

  • Horses: Wild horses have evolved to be excellent grazers. Their bodies are perfectly designed for a grass-based diet.
  • Cows, Sheep, and Goats: These are all ruminants. They spend a lot of time grazing in fields.
  • Kangaroos: Like the red kangaroo in the picture, many kangaroos are grazers.
  • Giant Pandas: Even though they are bears, giant pandas mostly eat bamboo, which is a type of grass!

What is Overgrazing?

Sometimes, grazers can eat too much grass in one area. This is called overgrazing. It happens when too many animals eat the grass without giving the plants enough time to grow back. Overgrazing can harm the land. It can lead to soil erosion and make it harder for plants to grow there in the future.
