PLOS ONE is a science journal. It publishes many different types of scientific papers. This means it covers almost all areas of science, not just one. For example, you can find articles about engineering, biology, and even how science connects to art. In 2017, it was the biggest science journal in the world. It published more articles each year than any other.
PLOS ONE is mainly for scientists who do research. But, regular people can also read it. The articles are written so that scientists from different fields can understand them. They are also clear enough for any educated person to read.
The Public Library of Science publishes PLOS ONE. This group also publishes other science journals, like PLOS Biology and PLOS Medicine.
How PLOS ONE Works
Publishing Research
Scientists who want to publish their work in PLOS ONE usually pay a fee. This fee can be around US$1695. Once the paper is published, anyone can read it for free. This is called "open access." It means the information is not hidden behind a paywall, which would make people pay to read it.
Keeping Quality High
PLOS ONE publishes a lot of research, sometimes over 20,000 papers in one year. Because of this, sometimes a paper might be published that has mistakes. When this happens, PLOS ONE will "retract" the paper. This means they publicly announce that the paper had problems. They explain what was wrong and say they no longer support it. This helps keep the quality of science high.
