Paas (dye) facts for kids
Paas is a well-known American brand that makes special dyes for coloring Easter eggs. Many families use Paas kits to decorate eggs for the Easter holiday. The company that owns Paas is called Signature Brands, LLC.
The Story of Paas
How Paas Began
The idea for Paas Easter egg dye came from an American named William Townley. He owned a drug store in Newark, New Jersey. There, he created many recipes for products people could use at home.
In 1893, William Townley figured out how to make dye into small tablets. This led to the first modern Easter egg dyeing kit. Each tablet cost five cents back then. Customers would mix the tablets with water and vinegar to make the colorful dye. Over time, Townley changed his business name to the Paas Dye Company. The name "Paas" comes from the word Passen, which means "Easter" in Pennsylvania Dutch.
Growing the Company
By 1901, the Paas production building in Newark had many workers. Records show that seven men and twenty women worked there. Paas grew to become the biggest maker of Easter egg dyes. Later, William Townley's son, Philip B. Townley, took over as the head of the company.
