Historians believe Pelayo came from an important family. Some think his family founded a monastery called Lourenzá. One idea is that he was the son of Count Rodrigo Gutiérrez. Another idea suggests he was the brother of Count Munio Rodríguez. Their father might have been Rodrigo Fernández.

The first time Pelayo Rodríguez is mentioned in history is in 985. He appeared as a witness to a gift made to a monastery. After that, he was often mentioned in royal documents. These documents are called "charters." He continued to appear in records until 1005 or 1007.

His Role in the Kingdom

Pelayo Rodríguez was a very active person in the kingdom. He was involved in important events. At one point, he joined other nobles, Gonzalo Vermúdez and Munio Fernández. They rebelled against King Bermudo II.

This rebellion was successful for a short time. Between November 991 and September 992, they managed to force the king out of his kingdom. However, Pelayo Rodríguez soon returned to the king's good graces. He continued to be an important figure.

His Family Life

Pelayo Rodríguez married a woman named Gotina Fernández. She was the daughter of Fernando Bermúdez de Cea. Gotina's sister, Jimena, became a queen. She married García Sánchez II of Pamplona. This made Gotina an aunt to the famous Sancho III the Great.

Gotina brought many lands to their marriage. These lands were in Galicia and León. Pelayo and Gotina had at least one son, Fernando Peláez. They also likely had two daughters. One daughter was Fronilda, who married Ordoño Bermúdez. He was a son of King Bermudo II. Another daughter was probably Elvira, who married Fernando Flaínez.

Gotina Fernández was last mentioned in 1028. She made a gift to a monastery with her son Fernando and his wife.
