Pelegrí Clavé i Roqué (born June 17, 1811, died September 13, 1880) was a Spanish painter. He was known for his Romantic style of art. He also lived and taught in Mexico for many years.

Biography

Pelegrí Clavé started studying art at the Escola de la Llotja in Barcelona when he was 11 years old. He studied there from 1822 to 1833. His teachers included Salvador Mayol and Pau Rigalt. He was a very good student and won many awards. After finishing his studies, he received a special scholarship from the "Junta de Comerç" (Board of Trade). This scholarship helped him continue his art education.

In 1834, Pelegrí went to Rome, Italy, to study at the Accademia di San Luca. He learned from famous artists like Pietro Tenerani and Tommaso Minardi. They introduced him to Friedrich Overbeck and the Nazarene school of painting. During this time, he traveled a lot around Italy and France. He also showed his paintings in Milan. After his scholarship ended, he chose to stay in Rome and work as a painter.

In July 1846, the Mexican government's representative in Rome asked Pelegrí and his friend, Manuel Vilar, to come to Mexico. Pelegrí was asked to become the Director of painting, and Manuel Vilar the Director of sculpture, at the Academy of San Carlos in Mexico City. They started their new jobs in August of that year. Manuel Vilar passed away in Mexico in 1860. Pelegrí Clavé stayed at the Academy until 1868.

Besides his teaching duties, Pelegrí painted many portraits of important people in Mexican society. He and his students also helped decorate the dome of the Temple of San Felipe Neri in 1867. Sadly, a fire in 1914 destroyed their work and much of the dome.

In 1868, Pelegrí returned to Barcelona. He was chosen to be a member of the Reial Acadèmia Catalana de Belles Arts de Sant Jordi. Many of his early artworks are now kept there. He also became part of the group that decided who would receive scholarships to study art in Rome. In 1876, he helped choose Antoni Fabrés, who later became a Director at the Academy of San Carlos himself.
