Pelham's Pillar

Pelham's Pillar is a tall, impressive monument located in Cabourne, West Lindsey, England. It was built to honor Charles Anderson-Pelham, 1st Earl of Yarborough, who passed away in 1846. This special tower was designed as a viewing spot for the Earls to look out over their vast land, known as the Yarborough estate.

What is Pelham's Pillar?

Pelham's Pillar stands at an amazing 39 metres (128 ft) (about 128 feet) high! Imagine looking up at something that tall. At its entrance, two strong stone lions stand guard, adding to its grand appearance. People say that when the pillar was first built, everything you could see from the very top belonged to Charles Anderson-Pelham. This gives you an idea of how much land his family owned!

Who Built This Amazing Tower?

The design for Pelham's Pillar came from an architect named Edward James Willson from Lincoln. The first stone of the pillar was laid by Pelham's son, Charles Anderson-Pelham, 2nd Earl of Yarborough. However, it was his grandson, Charles Anderson-Pelham, 3rd Earl of Yarborough, who finished building it in 1849.

A Royal Visitor

In the same year it was completed, a very important person came to visit Pelham's Pillar: Prince Albert! He was the husband of Queen Victoria, and his visit made the new tower even more special.
