The Perry–Payne Building is a really old and important building in Cleveland, Ohio, United States. It's located in an area called the Warehouse District, which used to be full of warehouses. Famous architects designed this building for an important politician. When it was finished, people from all over the country admired its amazing design. For many years, it held offices for companies that made things and moved goods. Today, it is recognized as a historic site.

Amazing Architecture
The Perry–Payne Building is eight stories tall. It was mostly built using strong stone. The architects, Cudell and Richardson, gave it a very special look.
Design Secrets
The front of the building has seven sections, and most of it is made of windows! But the sides of the building have almost no windows at all. This design was very new for its time. Even though the outside looks like traditional stone, the building uses strong iron inside. This iron structure allowed for many more windows than usual.
The floors inside are made of concrete and tile. This was different from older buildings by the same architects, which often had wooden floors.
The Unique Lightwell
When the building was new, it had a special feature called a "lightwell." This was an open space inside the building with a glass roof. It let natural light shine down into the middle of the building. Architects from all over the United States came to see this revolutionary design. The lightwell especially caught their attention. This made Cudell and Richardson very famous! Today, the lightwell has been covered with flooring.
Building's History
Construction on the Perry–Payne Building started in 1888 and finished in 1889. It was named after its owner, Henry B. Payne, who was an important politician. "Perry" was his wife's maiden name.
From Offices to Homes
In its early years, the building's offices were mostly used by companies that shipped goods and made iron. These types of businesses were very important to Cleveland's economy back then. They stayed in the building for many years.
However, the building is no longer used for offices. From 1994 to 1995, it was changed into an apartment building. Now, 92 families live there!
A Historic Landmark
In 1973, the Perry–Payne Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's officially recognized as an important historic place because of its special architecture. Later, in 1982, Cleveland's Warehouse District also became a historic district. The Perry–Payne Building was named one of the important buildings that helped make the district historic.
