The Perth Museum and Art Gallery is a cool place in Perth, Scotland, where you can see lots of interesting things. It's inside a building called the Marshall Monument. This building is named after Thomas Hay Marshall, who was like a mayor of Perth a long time ago.
History of the Museum
A man named David Morison designed the Marshall Monument. Building it started in 1822. It first opened in 1824 as a library and museum. A group called the Literary and Antiquarian Society of Perth created it.
This museum is one of the oldest buildings in the United Kingdom made just for a museum! In 1915, the Society gave the building to the city of Perth. They said it had to always be used as a library or museum.
Later, the museum received many gifts of money and paintings. Because of these gifts, they planned to add more space to the building. In 1930, there was a competition to choose the best design for the new part.
A Scottish architect named Sir James John Burnett helped pick the winner. A company from Perth, Smart Stewart Mitchell, won the competition. The new part of the museum opened in 1935. The Duke and Duchess of York opened it. They later became King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.
This new section held the donated paintings. It also housed the natural history collections. These collections came from the Perthshire Society of Natural Science. They used to be in another museum in the city. In May 1965, the building was officially recognized as a historic building. This means it is important to protect.
What You Can See at the Museum
The museum has many interesting items in its collection. One special item is a piece of the Strathmore meteorite. This is a rock from space that fell to Earth!
Another amazing thing to see is the mummy of a woman named Ta-kr-hb. A mummy is a preserved body, often from ancient Egypt.
