The very first Pitcher & Piano opened its doors in September 1986. It was located on Fulham Road in London. The company itself was started a little earlier, in August 1985.

Pitcher & Piano was special because it was designed to be the UK's first "female-friendly" pub chain. This meant it was created to be a comfortable and welcoming place for everyone. The first location was designed by Sheila McKenzie. She later became the managing director of the company until 1989.

The company grew steadily over the years. By 1996, there were 7 Pitcher & Piano locations. Just ten years later, in 2006, the number of locations had grown to 38 across England.

Who Started It?

The company was founded by a person named Andrew Bonnell. He started the business in August 1961. Other important people helped the company grow, like Duncan Watts, who was a director from 1991 to 1998.
