What's in a Name? The History of Priorswood
Priorswood got its name from an old house called Friarswood. This house was located near Belcamp Lane. The name "Friarswood" came from a very old priory. A priory was a type of monastery, often linked to knights from places like Clontarf and Kilmainham long ago.
Where is Priorswood Located?
Priorswood is in the northern part of Coolock. It used to be countryside. Today, it borders Darndale to the east and Clonshaugh to the west. Coolock itself is to the south.
The modern neighborhoods in Priorswood are found:
- West of Darndale
- North of Greencastle Road
- East of Clonshaugh Industrial Estate
- South of the R139 road
A small stream called the Turnapin Stream flows through the northern part of Priorswood. This stream is one of the main parts that form the Mayne River.
How to Get to Priorswood
You can reach Priorswood by taking Priorswood Road. This road is off the Blunden Drive/Darndale Roundabout, which is on the Malahide Road. You can also get there via Clonshaugh Road from the N32.
Priorswood is also very close to Dublin Airport, about 2.5 kilometers away. Several Dublin Bus routes, like the 27, 27x, 27c, and 27b, serve the area on the Malahide Road.
What Can You Find in Priorswood?
Priorswood is mostly made up of homes. It also has a local church and two schools. These are St Francis of Assisi Junior and Senior National Schools. There is also a special school for Traveller children.
Next to the church, you'll find Clonshaugh Shopping Centre. Here you can find:

For outdoor fun, Belcamp Park and Darndale Park are located nearby to the north. There is also a Gaelic Athletic Association sports ground.
Nearby Developments
Just next to Priorswood, in Clonshaugh, you'll find the Bewley's Airport Hotel. Also, a Hilton Hotel and several shops are located at the Northern Cross development. This area used to be the site of Belcamp College in Balgriffin.
Bewley's, a well-known company, has a tea and coffee packing factory west of the Northern Cross area. Many other companies are also based there.
Religion in Priorswood
Priorswood has its own parish within the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Dublin. The main church serving the community is the Church of St Francis of Assisi.
How Priorswood is Represented
In the Irish parliament, called Dáil Éireann, Priorswood is part of the Dublin Bay North area. This means that people living in Priorswood vote for politicians who represent this larger area in the Dáil.
