Ramon Vives Ayné was a talented Spanish painter from Catalonia. He was born in Reus on December 6, 1814, and passed away in Pontevedra on October 10, 1894. He was especially known for painting still-life pictures (like bowls of fruit or flowers), portraits of people, and scenes of hunting. Most of his artwork looked very real, in a style called naturalism.

A Young Artist's Journey
When Ramon was seventeen years old, he began studying art at a famous school in Barcelona called the Escola de la Llotja. Just two years later, he moved to Madrid to continue his art education at another important school, the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando.
Becoming a Teacher and Famous Painter
In 1866, Ramon Vives Ayné became a drawing teacher at the Institute of Pontevedra. He was recognized for his skills and became an Academician in 1870. After he retired in 1879, he spent his time painting historical scenes. He stayed in Pontevedra until he passed away.
Ramon often showed his paintings in Pontevedra and Madrid. In Madrid, he was even named the Honorary President of the Liceo Artístico, which was a special honor for artists.
His Well-Known Portraits
Some of Ramon Vives Ayné's most famous portraits include:
- A painting of Queen Christina.
- A portrait of another painter, Lluís Rigalt, which you can see at the Acadèmia de Sant Jordi de Barcelona.
- A painting of King Alfonso XII. This portrait was kept at the Museo del Prado until 1915, when it was sadly destroyed in a fire.
