Ramon d'Abadal i de Vinyals (1888–1970) was an important Catalan historian, politician, and journalist. He is best known for his detailed studies on the early history of Catalonia.

Ramon d'Abadal's Life Story
Early Life and Education
Ramon d'Abadal i de Vinyals was born in Vic, a city in Catalonia, in 1888. He studied law at the University of Barcelona and finished his degree in 1910. He also spent time studying history in Barcelona and in different places in France.
Starting a Political Career
Around 1909-1910, Ramon d'Abadal joined a youth group called Joventut Nacionalista. This group was connected to a political party known as la Lliga Regionalista. Soon after, he began his career in politics. He served as a member of parliament for the province of Vic in 1917 and again in 1921.
Work in the Commonwealth of Catalonia
During the time of the Commonwealth of Catalonia, Ramon d'Abadal worked on many important projects. He helped with the Biblioteca de Catalunya (Library of Catalonia). He also served as a vice-president on the Board of Education. This shows his dedication to learning and culture.
Journalism and Later Politics
Ramon d'Abadal was involved in starting a political group called Accio Catalana. However, he left this group when the Republic was created in Spain. He then returned to his old party, la Lliga. He was the director of the newspaper La Publicitat in 1922. He also managed another important newspaper, La Veu de Catalunya, from 1933 to 1936. In 1935, he helped create a new newspaper called L'Instant.
Focus on History
In 1936, Ramon d'Abadal moved to Italy. He came back to Catalonia in 1939. After returning, he spent most of his time studying history. He was especially interested in the period of the Catalan counts. These were the early rulers of Catalonia. He also studied the history that came before them. Ramon d'Abadal passed away in 1970 in Barcelona.
Ramon d'Abadal's Historical Works
Ramon d'Abadal wrote many important books about history. His early work focused on the history of law. In 1913, he helped edit the Usatges de Barcelona, which were old laws from Barcelona.
After 1939, he wrote some of his most famous historical books:
- L’abat Oliba, bisbe de Vic, i la seva època (The Abbot Oliba, Bishop of Vic, and His Times) published in 1948.
- Els primers comtes catalans (The First Catalan Counts) published in 1958.
- Els precedents antics a la historia de Catalunya (The Ancient Foundations of Catalonia’s History) published in 1967.
- Dels visigots als catalans (From the Visigoths to the Catalans) published in 1969 and 1970.
- His most famous work is the many volumes of Catalunya carolingia (Carolingian Catalonia). These were published over many years, from 1926 to 1971. This series explores the history of Catalonia during the time of the Carolingian Empire.
