The series tells the exciting adventures of a boy named Will. Will is an orphan who gets chosen to become a Ranger's apprentice. Rangers are special people who are great at tracking, archery, and fighting. They work for the King of Araluen. Will's main job is to help keep the Kingdom of Araluen safe. He protects it from invaders, people who might betray the king, and other dangers. Will is joined on his journeys by his wise mentor, Halt, and his brave best friend, Horace.

About the Series

The Ranger's Apprentice series first had twelve books. The eleventh book was a collection of short stories. The twelfth book was a follow-up story set 16 years later.

There is also a spin-off series called Brotherband. This series started in 2011 and features new characters. The sixth book in the Brotherband series came out in June 2016. In 2018, the twelfth Ranger's Apprentice book was renamed. It became the first book in a new sequel series, Ranger's Apprentice: The Royal Ranger.

The Ranger's Apprentice series has sold over three million copies worldwide. John Flanagan first wrote these stories for his son. He wanted to get his son interested in reading. Ten years later, Flanagan found the stories again. He decided to turn them into books for everyone to enjoy.
