Building the Original Rangiātea Church

How the Idea Started

In 1848, a very important Māori leader named Te Rauparaha returned to Ōtaki. He suggested a big project: building a new church. He challenged the chief of the Ngāti Wehi Wehi tribe to take on this task, and the chief agreed.

Who Led the Construction?

The building of the first Rangiātea Church was a team effort. Te Rauparaha helped guide the project. He worked alongside an English missionary named Octavius Hadfield. Together, they made sure the church was built.

Materials and Design Choices

Building the church in the 1840s was a huge job. Workers had to float large tōtara logs down rivers. These logs came from nearby places like Ohau and Waikawa. The biggest logs were used for the main support beam, called the ridge pole. They also became the central pillars inside the church. All the other parts, like the rafters and wall slabs, were also made from strong tōtara wood.

The church's design was special because it mixed two different styles. It used ideas from both English and Māori church building traditions. English carpenters helped with parts like the windows and the floor. A carpenter named Edward Prince, who arrived in Wellington in 1841, was hired to make the window frames and do other important work.

Keeping the Church Strong: Restorations

The Rangiātea Church needed care over the years. The first time it was officially fixed up and restored was in 1886. This helped keep the old building in good shape for many more years.
