Recorded Music NZ is a group that helps people who make and sell music in New Zealand. It used to be called the Recording Industry Association of New Zealand (RIANZ).

This group works with record producers, music sellers, and recording artists. Anyone who owns the rights to recorded music in New Zealand can join. This includes big music companies like Sony and Universal. It also includes smaller independent labels and artists who release their own music. Recorded Music NZ has over 2000 members.

In June 2013, RIANZ joined with another group called PPNZ Music Licensing. They became one new group, which is now called Recorded Music NZ.

Recorded Music NZ does three main things:

  • It helps its members with services like the Aotearoa Music Awards. It also creates the Official Aotearoa Music Charts.
  • It handles music licensing. This means making sure people pay to use music legally. They often do this through a joint project called OneMusic.
  • It works to protect copyright for music. This means making sure artists get paid for their work.

Recorded Music NZ also helps manage the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame.

History of Recorded Music NZ

The first group, called the New Zealand Federation of Phonographic Industry (NZFPI), started in 1957. Its job was to help manage music copyright for artists. Later, it changed its name to PPNZ Music Licensing.

In 1972, a new group was formed called the Recording Industry Association of New Zealand (RIANZ). This group worked to support the music industry. It also ran the New Zealand Music Awards. In 1975, RIANZ started creating The Official NZ Music Charts. These charts listed the most popular albums.

To make things work better, PPNZ Music Licensing and RIANZ joined together in 2013. They became one organization, which is now known as Recorded Music NZ.

Aotearoa Music Awards

The Aotearoa Music Awards are a big event each year. Recorded Music NZ gives these awards to celebrate amazing music in New Zealand. They honor artists and technical achievements in recording music.

Winning an Aotearoa Music Award is one of the highest honors for a New Zealand musician. These awards have been given out every year since 1965.

Recorded Music NZ also helps fund a cash prize for the winner of the Taite Music Prize. This prize is managed by another group called Independent Music New Zealand. In 2024, the prize was $12,500.

Official Aotearoa Music Charts

The Official Aotearoa Music Charts show the most popular songs and albums in New Zealand each week. Recorded Music NZ creates these charts. They used to be called the Official New Zealand Music Chart.

The charts include the Top 40 singles and albums. There are also charts for new and popular songs, and for New Zealand artists. All the charts are made using information from music sales. This includes both physical CDs and digital music downloads.

Protecting Music Creators

Recorded Music NZ works to protect the rights of music creators. This means making sure artists and record labels get paid when their music is used. It's important that people don't use copyrighted music without permission.

Laws are in place to help protect music. These laws make sure that creators are rewarded for their hard work. This helps the music industry in New Zealand continue to grow and create new songs.
