Reed's Cave is home to a tiny creature called Pseudosinella dobati. This small insect is a type of springtail. It is a true troglobite, which means it lives its whole life only inside caves. This makes it a very special resident of Reed's Cave.
Visiting the Cave
Most people are not allowed to enter Reed's Cave. However, a few special visits are sometimes permitted during the summer months. This helps to protect the cave and its unique inhabitants.
Protecting Bats
Reed's Cave is a very important home for bats. Because there are limits on who can enter, the cave has become a safe place. Many Greater Horseshoe Bats use the cave as a roosting site. This means they rest and sleep there.
Cave Connections
Long ago, Reed's Cave was connected to another cave called Bakers Pit. But this connection has since been filled in with concrete. This change separated the two cave systems.
Inside Easter Chamber
Near the entrance of Reed's Cave, you first need to crawl a long way. After that, there is a tight squeeze to get through. This leads you into a small, pretty grotto. Beyond the grotto, you will find a larger area known as Easter Chamber.
Features of Easter Chamber
Easter Chamber is filled with many large boulders. You can also see a few small pools of water. The chamber has some interesting rock formations too. From Easter Chamber, several passages lead deeper into the cave.
The Little Man Formation
One of these passages takes you to the "Little Man" formation. This unique rock shape is directly below the tomb of the Cabell family. It is one of the most famous sights inside Reed's Cave.
