Renée Beaulieu is a Canadian film director and screenwriter from Quebec. She is known for her interesting career change from being a pharmacist to making movies. Her first major film was Adrien (Le Garagiste), which came out in 2015.

From Pharmacy to Filmmaking

Renée Beaulieu grew up in the town of Trois-Pistoles in Quebec. Before she became a filmmaker, she worked as a pharmacist, helping people with their medicine. However, she decided to follow her passion for movies and went back to school to study film.

Today, besides making films, she is also a professor. She teaches film studies at the Université de Montréal, sharing her knowledge with students.

Career in Movies

Early Work

Beaulieu began her film career by writing scripts. Her first screenplay to be made into a movie was Le ring in 2007, which was directed by Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette. After that, she wrote and directed her own short films called Qui, Coupable, and Le Vide.

Directing Feature Films

In 2015, Beaulieu directed her first full-length movie, Adrien (Le Garagiste). The story is about a man who is dealing with a serious illness. Beaulieu was inspired to write this story by one of her last clients when she was a pharmacist, who had kidney disease.

She not only directed the movie but also edited it. Her editing work was so good that she was nominated for an award for Best Editing at the 4th Canadian Screen Awards in 2016.
