Robert I (born September 25, 1216 – died February 8, 1250), also known as Robert the Good, was an important French noble. He was the very first Count of Artois. Robert was the fifth son of King Louis VIII of France and Blanche of Castile.
Life as Count of Artois
Robert received the land of Artois as his own special territory when he turned 21 in 1237. This was part of his father's will, as King Louis VIII had passed away in 1226.
In 1240, Pope Gregory IX was having a disagreement with Emperor Frederick II. The Pope even offered to make Robert the new emperor! But Robert, being a French count, politely said no. He didn't want to pretend to have such a big title.
Family Life
On June 14, 1237, Robert married a woman named Matilda of Brabant. She was the daughter of Henry II of Brabant and Marie of Hohenstaufen.
Robert and Matilda had two children:
- Blanche (born 1248 – died 1302)
- Robert II (born 1250 – died 1302), who later became the Count of Artois after his father.
Robert's Death
Robert I took part in the Seventh Crusade, which was a big religious war. Sadly, he died during this crusade in 1250. He was leading a very brave, but risky, attack on a city called Al Mansurah. His brother, King Louis IX, didn't even know about the attack.
After crossing a river, Robert and a group of Knights Templars (brave warrior monks) attacked an enemy camp. They even managed to kill the enemy leader, Fakhr-ad-Din Yusuf! Feeling very confident, Robert, the Templar knights, and some English soldiers rushed into the town. But they got trapped in the narrow streets. According to a historian named Jean de Joinville, Robert fought bravely for a while inside a house. However, he was eventually overwhelmed and killed.
