About Rogelia León
Rogelia León was born in Granada, Spain, on September 16, 1828. She came from a noble family and received a good education. She went to the Santa Cruz de Granada school and took literature classes at the Liceo Granada. These classes helped her start writing poetry.
Her Early Writings
Her first poems appeared in a magazine from Granada called El Capricho. She kept publishing her work in many local magazines. Some of these were El Eco de Occidente, El Álbum Granadino, and La Alhambra. Later, her writings were featured in bigger magazines across Spain. These included La Mujer and El Fénix.
Rogelia León was a main writer for La Violeta magazine. This magazine was led by Faustina Sáez de Melgar. Rogelia wrote poems, short stories, and articles for it.
Her Published Works
In 1857, her book of poems, Autos de la Alhambra, was published. One of the poems in this book was about Sappho. Sappho was a famous ancient poet. The poem showed Sappho feeling sad about how men often preferred women just for their looks or talents.
Rogelia León was also a teacher at the Liceo de Granada. She was a member of important groups for writers and artists. These included the Málaga Scientific, Literary, and Artistic Circle. She was also a special member of the Madrid Scientific-Literary Academy.
Fighting for Freedom
Rogelia León believed that slavery should be ended. She worked with other famous women like Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda and Concepción Arenal to fight against it. Her poem "Canción del esclavo" (Slave's Song) was published in La Violeta. It was also in her book Auras de la Alhambra. This poem was dedicated to a Cuban poet named Gabriel de la Concepción Valdés.
Rogelia León passed away in Granada on May 16, 1870.
