Rose Island is a small, quiet island that's part of the Auckland Islands. These islands are a group far south of New Zealand. Rose Island is special because it's home to some rare animals and plants. It's also one of the bigger islands in its group, even though no people live there.

Exploring Rose Island

Rose Island is an island where no people live. It covers about 121 hectares, which is like 121 football fields. This makes it the fifth largest island in the Auckland Islands group. The Auckland Islands are a chain of islands far to the south, part of the New Zealand Outlying Islands.

Where is Rose Island?

Rose Island is found in the northeast part of the Auckland Islands. It sits right at the entrance of a place called Port Ross, which is on the main Auckland Island. It is also southwest of a larger island named Enderby Island.

A Safe Home for Wildlife

A long time ago, in the 1800s, rabbits were brought to Rose Island. There was also a small shed for people who might get shipwrecked. This was to help them survive.

However, the rabbits were later removed by the Department of Conservation. This helped make the island a safe place again. Now, Rose Island is a secure home for a special bird called the Auckland Islands teal. This is a type of duck that is very rare.

Plants of Rose Island

The plants on Rose Island include a tree called rata. Even though some of the original plants have been lost over time, Rose Island still has more of its natural plant life than many other parts of the Auckland Islands.
