Royal Stables

The Royal Stables (known in Spanish as Caballerizas Reales) are a special set of stables located in Córdoba, Spain. This important building is found in the old part of the city, right next to the Guadalquivir River. For many years, these stables were home to the finest horses, especially the famous Andalusian horse breed, which was developed there.

A Look Back: History of the Royal Stables

Why Were the Stables Built?

The Royal Stables were created by a special order from King Philip II on November 28, 1567. His goal was to create a new, official breed of Spanish Horse with specific standards. To do this, he decided to build a royal stable in Córdoba, a city known for its horses.

Who Built the Stables?

King Philip II asked Diego López de Haro y Sotomayor, who was the 1st Marquis of El Carpio, to oversee the building of the stables. They were built on part of the land belonging to the Alcázar fortress, a large castle-like building.

The Royal Horse Brand

Horses born and raised at the Royal Stables received a special brand. This brand was an "R" (for Real, meaning "royal") inside a "C" (for Córdoba), with a crown on top of the "C". This was the very first brand used for the horses of this newly organized breed, showing their royal origin and high quality.

Inside the Royal Stables: Architecture and Design

The Royal Stables have a strong, military-like design. This style fits well with their location next to the Alcázar fortress. The main part of the building has a unique ceiling with cross-shaped arches. These arches are supported by strong sandstone columns. The large space is divided into many smaller stables, each designed for the horses. Today, the building often hosts amazing horse shows and displays for visitors to enjoy.
