Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Rutley's, Inc. was a restaurant in New York City during the 1930s. It was located at 1440 Broadway. The restaurant faced big challenges because of the Great Depression, a time when many businesses struggled.

Even though Rutley's was still making some money, it couldn't pay all its bills in February 1932. Because of this, a special person named Richard M. Page was chosen to help manage the restaurant's money. This happened on February 15, 1932.

The Restaurant's Location

Rutley's, Inc. had a large space on Broadway. In April 1925, the Broadway Fortieth Street Corporation rented a whole store to Rutley's. This store was about 48 feet wide on Broadway.

It stretched from 40th Street (Manhattan) to 48th Street (Manhattan). The agreement was for 21 years. The restaurant also used a large basement area, which was about 10,800 square feet (1,003 square meters).

Financial Challenges

In February 1932, Rutley's, Inc. had serious money problems. A business owned by Ernest A. Smith had loaned the restaurant a lot of money. Between April and December 1925, they loaned Rutley's over $370,000.

However, Rutley's, Inc. was not making enough money to pay back this loan. They also had other debts. Because of these financial difficulties, the restaurant faced a legal process to deal with its debts.
