San Ramón is a town in Nicaragua. It is part of the Matagalpa Department. San Ramón is located about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) northeast of Matagalpa city. The road to San Ramón is paved, and it takes about 15-20 minutes to get there by car or bus.
History of San Ramón
San Ramón was founded in the year 1800. Before that, it was known by its native name, "Abai." The area was historically settled by different groups of indigenous people. These included the Sumo and Miskito peoples from Nicaragua's Atlantic coast. Also, the Chontales Indians, who are related to the ancient Mayans, lived here.
Climate and Weather
San Ramón has a unique climate because it's at a higher altitude than most of Nicaragua. This means it's usually cooler here. The temperature lows are often in the low 60s Fahrenheit (around 16-18°C), and highs are around the mid-80s Fahrenheit (around 29-30°C) all year round.
It often rains a little bit almost every day. Usually, there's a short period of light rain in the afternoon, which helps keep the air cool. Then, there's often another brief rain at night, which can be a bit heavier.
Fun Things to Do in San Ramón
San Ramón is an important stop on Nicaragua's Coffee Trail. It's a great starting point for many exciting tours and activities.
- Explore an old gold mine: You can take a guide to visit "La Reina," an abandoned gold mine about 5 kilometers (3 miles) from town.
- See beautiful waterfalls: Check out "La Lima" waterfall, which is about 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) from the city center. "La Garrota" waterfall is a bit further, about 3 kilometers (2 miles) away.

There are also two eco-resorts close by that help bring visitors to the town: "Esperanza Verde" and "La Selva Negra."
Many international visitors come to San Ramón. This is because of its pleasant climate and a history of international aid groups working there. For example, a non-profit organization called Corner of Love brings medical, dental, and eye care teams to San Ramón and many surrounding villages. Their volunteers also work on education and clean water projects. Other groups like USAID and Peace Corps have also been active in the area. Additionally, a Spanish organization called Associacion Catalana helps locals with coffee production, adult education, building projects, and offers scholarships.
