Sant Salvador, Breda facts for kids
Sant Salvador de Breda is an old Benedictine monastery and a parish church in Breda, a town in Catalonia, Spain. It's a place with a long history, where monks once lived and prayed, and it still serves as a church for the local community today.
Exploring the Monastery's Buildings
Not much of the very first buildings, which were built in the Romanesque style, are still standing. The best-preserved part is the bell tower. This tower was built between the 11th and 12th centuries and was later rebuilt. It's a tall, slender tower, about 32 meters (105 feet) high, and has a rectangular shape. The top four of its five floors have windows.
The main church, built between the 14th and 16th centuries, is in the Gothic style. This church is now used as the local parish church. It has an older cloister, which is a covered walkway around a courtyard. Part of this cloister was damaged in 1877. Next to the cloister is an old house that belonged to the abbey, with large windows and Gothic arches. Sadly, the tombs of important people buried here were damaged and robbed a long time ago, so not much remains of them.
The church next door, called Santa Maria, is now a museum for the town.
