Santa Lucía is a very old town. People lived here even before the Spanish arrived. Some records show that Spanish explorers visited around 1540. They were looking for valuable minerals. They soon started mining the rich veins of gold and silver.
Mining became a big part of the town's early life. On November 12, 1820, Santa Lucía officially became a municipality. This means it became its own local government area. It was part of the Tegucigalpa Department.
