Santo Domingo is a small town, also called a municipality, in the San Vicente department of El Salvador. It is located about 30 miles (48 kilometers) east of San Vicente. This peaceful town is home to about 17,000 people.
Life in Santo Domingo
Santo Domingo is known for its calm and quiet surroundings. The people here celebrate their annual town festivities from July 28 to August 4. These celebrations honor the town's special saint, Santo Domingo De Guzman.
Schools and Learning
The town has two main schools where all the children go.
- Ana Guerra de Jesus: This is a Catholic school. Teachers are nuns, and students attend church services every day as part of the school's rules. There is also a special part of the school for students who want to become teachers in Catholic schools.
- Escuela Municipal Esteban Castro: This is a smaller school that offers a general education to its students.
Both schools require students to wear a uniform. The uniform for Ana Guerra de Jesus looks more traditional than the one for Escuela Municipal. The colors and rules for wearing the uniforms are different for each school.
Religion in the Community
Most people in Santo Domingo, about 97%, are Catholic. A small number, less than 3%, are Protestant or Christian. Because most people are Catholic, there is a very large church right next to the Ana Guerra de Jesus school. The Protestant community usually meets in homes or small gathering places. The religious traditions in Santo Domingo are similar to those in the rest of El Salvador.
