Sebastián Battaglia's Playing Career
Even though Sebastián was born in Santa Fe Province, he started his football journey with the reserve team of Boca Juniors. He played his first professional game on May 31, 1998. He quickly became a very important player for Boca Juniors.
He played for five years at the club. In the middle of the 2003–04 season, Villarreal CF from La Liga in Spain bought half of his contract for €2.8 million. Villarreal was a great place for Battaglia because many former Boca players were already there. These players included Martín Palermo, Juan Román Riquelme, and Rodolfo Arruabarrena.
Playing in Spain and Returning Home
Battaglia played for Villarreal for only a season and a half. He didn't play as well as he had in Argentina. His family also found it hard to get used to living in Spain. After an injury kept him from playing for almost six months, he decided to go back to Argentina with his family. In July 2005, after long talks between Boca Juniors and Villarreal, he got his wish.
Back at Boca Juniors, he started playing well again and even improved his game. He became the team captain. He was also called to play for the Argentina national team in a World Cup Qualifiers match against Peru on October 8, 2005. He also started in a friendly game against Qatar in November of the same year.
Important Goals and Records
During the 'Torneo de Verano' in 2008, Battaglia scored a goal in the 'Superclásico'. This is a big game against their main rivals, River Plate. Boca Juniors won that game 2–0. On May 4, 2008, in the 'Torneo Clausura', Battaglia scored against River Plate again. He headed in a goal from a corner kick, which helped Boca win the game 1–0.
On December 11, 2011, Battaglia came into the game as a substitute. He played the last few minutes of the final match of the 2011 Apertura. Boca Juniors had already won the title two matches earlier. By being part of this winning team, he became the most successful player in Boca Juniors' history, with 18 trophies.
Sebastián Battaglia's Coaching Career
On March 20, 2018, Battaglia became the manager of Primera Nacional club Club Almagro. This was his first time being a coach. His first game was against Instituto on March 21, which ended in a 0–0 draw. He was fired on May 11 because the team didn't get promoted.
A week after leaving Almagro, Battaglia became an assistant coach for Julio César Falcioni at Banfield. They both left the club at the end of 2018.
Coaching at Boca Juniors
In early 2020, Battaglia was named manager of Boca Juniors' reserve team. In July 2021, he became the temporary manager for the main Boca Juniors team. This happened because the regular manager, Miguel Ángel Russo, and most of the team had to isolate themselves. Battaglia was in charge for two games.
On August 17, 2021, Battaglia was officially named the interim manager of Boca until December. This happened after Russo left the team.
