Senecio pinnatifolius, also known as coast groundsel, dune groundsel, or variable groundsel, is a type of flowering plant. It is a native herb found only in Australia.
About the Coast Groundsel
This plant grows upright and can reach up to one meter (about 3 feet) in height. It has bright yellow flowers that make it easy to spot.
How Scientists Named This Plant
A scientist named Achille Richard first described this plant in 1834. For a long time, it was thought to be part of another plant species called Senecio lautus.
However, in 1969, experts realized that the Australian plants were a unique species. So, the original name, Senecio pinnatifolius, was used again.
Scientists have found that there are many different types, or varieties, of this plant. It can be tricky to sort them all out! In 2005, a new list of varieties was published. Here are some of them:
- Senecio pinnatifolius var. alpinus (Highland groundsel)
- Senecio pinnatifolius var. capillifolius (Fineleaf coast groundsel)
- Senecio pinnatifolius var. lanceolatus (Lanceleaf coast groundsel)
- Senecio pinnatifolius var. latilobus
- Senecio pinnatifolius var. laucocarpus
- Senecio pinnatifolius var. maritimus (Western coast groundsel)
- Senecio pinnatifolius var. pinnatifolius (Common coast groundsel)
- Senecio pinnatifolius var. serratus
Where It Lives
The coast groundsel is native to Australia. This means it naturally grows there and nowhere else in the world.
