The Serrasalmus elongatus is a type of piranha that looks long and thin. People often call it the elongated piranha or pike piranha because of its shape, which reminds them of a pike fish. In the places where it naturally lives, this fish is one of the smaller piranha species. Locals sometimes call it caribe pinche, which means "mediocre piranha." This is similar to how they refer to the iridescent piranha (S. irritans). This local name has led to some trade names like "Pingke piranha" or "Serrasalmus pinke," but these are not real scientific names.
About the Elongated Piranha
Adult Serrasalmus elongatus fish usually live in deep, cloudy "white water" rivers. Young S. elongatus fish, however, prefer shallow, dark "black waters" found in lagoons. This difference in habitat helps them grow safely.
Can You Keep an Elongated Piranha as a Pet?
Serrasalmus elongatus are known for nipping at the fins of other fish. Because of this, if someone keeps them in an aquarium, they should be kept alone in their own tank. It's important to know that keeping these fish as pets is not allowed in some places, like Alabama and many other states. Always check local laws before thinking about getting any exotic pet.
