The Shetland Women's Suffrage Association was a group in Shetland, Scotland. They worked to help women get the right to vote. This movement was called women’s suffrage.

How the Group Started

The Shetland Women's Suffrage Association began in 1909. Their very first meeting took place on October 23, 1909. It was held at the home of Christina Jamieson. Nineteen women and one man attended this important first gathering. Christina Jamieson helped organize the meeting.

What They Did

This group was connected to the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies. This was a larger organization that worked for women's voting rights. The Shetland group did many things to share their message.

They spoke at public meetings to explain why women should vote. They also handed out leaflets to spread information. The members wrote letters to local newspapers. All these actions helped promote the idea of women's suffrage.

In 1911, a special banner was made for a big event in London. This event was called the Suffrage Coronation Procession. The banner was created by Stanley Cursiter and Christina Jamieson. Stanley Cursiter was from the Orcadian Women's Suffrage Society.

Helping During Wartime

During the First World War, the association helped injured soldiers. They made bandages for medical use. They also held classes to teach first aid and nursing skills. The group also raised money to help. They donated money to the Scottish Women's Hospitals. This money helped pay for a special hospital bed, which they called the "Lerwick Bed."
