Shubashini "Shuba" Jeyaratnam (born July 15, 1976 – died July 17, 2014), known as Shuba Jay, was a talented Malaysian actress and performer. She became well-known for her roles in many TV shows. Shuba Jay, her husband, and their daughter sadly passed away when Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was shot down.
Shuba Jay's Career
Shuba Jay studied Communications at university. After graduating, she worked as a writer for the New Straits Times newspaper. She also worked in the newspaper's advertising department.
Acting and TV Shows
In 2009, Shuba Jay was part of the 15Malaysia project. This project created a series of short films about different social and political topics. In 2010, she and her father appeared on a reality TV show called Mari Menari. This show, whose name means Let's Dance in Malay, was on Astro Ria.
Shuba Jay started acting in 2011. She became famous for her roles in several local TV shows. Some of these popular shows included Spanar Jaya, Gadis 3, and Sugumana Sumaigal. She also acted in Malaysian movies like Relationship Status (2012) and Tokak (2013). On stage, she performed in plays such as Fourplay and Charley's Auntie.
Personal Life
Shuba Jay met her future husband, Paul Goes, while on vacation in Vietnam. They got married in 2010. After her marriage, Shuba Jay became a strong supporter of breastfeeding and home birthing. The story of her daughter Kaela's birth at home was even shared in local news.
Many fans knew her simply as "Shuba Jay." Prestige Magazine recognized her as one of Malaysia's top 40 people under the age of 40.
Tragic Death
On July 17, 2014, Shuba Jay and her family were traveling on Malaysia Airlines Flight 17. Sadly, the plane was shot down, and everyone on board passed away. This happened just two days after Shuba Jay's 38th birthday.
Many actors and film directors in Malaysia were very shocked and sad about her sudden death. Shuba Jay was a well-known actress who wanted to continue her acting career outside of Malaysia.
The bodies of Shuba Jay and her family arrived back in Malaysia on September 2, 2014. Their funeral services were held on the same day at the Nirvana Memorial Centre.
