Sociedad is a small town in El Salvador. It is a municipality located in the Morazán Department. This area is in the eastern part of El Salvador. Sociedad is found between two other important areas, La Unión and San Miguel.
History of Sociedad
Sociedad was officially started on April 18, 1838. A military leader named Colonel Narciso Benítez founded the town. He was from Colombia and had worked with Simón Bolívar, a very famous South American hero.
In 1874, Sociedad was given the special title of "town." The next year, it became part of the Morazán department. A former president of Costa Rica, Braulio Carrillo Colina, spent time in this area.
A report from 1878 described how Sociedad grew quickly for about 30 years. This growth happened because people were mining minerals from a place called "Monte Mayor." They also grew and traded indigo, a plant used to make blue dye.
However, the mining stopped, and the price of indigo dropped. This made the town's progress slow down. The report also said that Sociedad had a nice church and a large town hall. The town hall even had secure jails and a room used as a school. The cemetery was surrounded by a strong adobe wall.
Culture and Celebrations
The people of Sociedad celebrate their Patron Saint Festivities every year. These special celebrations happen from June 23 to 24. They honor San Juan Bautista, also known as Saint John the Baptist.
