The Sonchus canariensis, also known as the tree sonchus, is a special plant. It only grows in the Canary Islands, which are a group of islands off the coast of Africa. This plant is unique to these islands, meaning you won't find it growing naturally anywhere else in the world!
What Does It Look Like?
This plant can grow quite tall, sometimes up to 3 meters (about 10 feet) high. Its leaves grow in a circle, like a rosette, at the end of its branches.
The flowers of the tree sonchus grow in wide clusters. Each flower cluster can be about 1.5 centimeters across. Its leaves are deeply cut, almost like feathers, with thin, narrow parts.
Where Does It Grow?
The tree sonchus is found only in the central Canary Islands. There are two main types, called subspecies. One type, canariensis, grows on two of the islands. The other type, orotavensis, is found only on the island of Tenerife.
What's in a Name?
The name Sonchus comes from an old Latin word. A famous writer named Pliny the Elder used this word a very long time ago in his writings about nature.
The second part of its name, canariensis, simply means "from the Canary Islands." This tells us right away where this unique plant makes its home!
