The St. John's Lutheran Church is a church in Evansville, Wisconsin. It is part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. This church has a rich history, starting in the 1930s. It moved to its current building in the late 1950s.
The Church's Beginning
The church first started in June 1936. Back then, it was called First Lutheran. In 1938, the church bought an older building. This building used to be an Episcopal church. It had the name "St. John's" written over its door. Because of this, the congregation decided to change its name. They became St. John's Lutheran Church.
A New Home for the Church
By April 1951, the church community was growing. Their building on First Street was becoming too small. So, they started making plans for a new, bigger church. In 1956, they bought the land for the new building. Construction began in 1957. The very first church service in the new building was held on June 15, 1958.
Special Church Design
The church building finished in 1957 has a special design. A famous architect named John Steinmann helped design it. He was inspired by the style of another well-known architect, Frank Lloyd Wright. Because of its unique design and history, the church was recognized as important. It was added to the State Register of Historic Places in 2011. The next year, in 2012, it was also added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is a historically important building in the United States.
