St. John's Parsonage is a very old and important house located at 633 Pearl Street in Elizabeth, New Jersey. It's in Union County, New Jersey, in the United States. This building has a long history and has been used for many different things over the years.

What is St. John's Parsonage?

A parsonage is a special house where a church leader, like a priest or minister, lives. St. John's Parsonage served as the home and even a school for St. John's Church for many years.

A House with a Long History

The house was used by St. John's Church from 1749 until about 1885. After that, the church used it to help people in need until 1902. Later, it was sold and became a place where people could rent rooms, like a boarding house.

In 1960, the Elizabethtown Historical Society bought the house. They worked hard to fix it up and bring it back to how it looked in 1818.

How Old is the Building?

There's a stone sign on the front of the house that says it was built in 1696 and rebuilt in 1817. The main part of the building, which is made of red brick, shows the style of architecture called Federal style. This part dates back to at least 1749.

One section of the house is thought to be from the original 1696 building. The way the house is designed and its shape are very common for homes built in New Jersey during the late 1700s and early 1800s.

Why is it Important?

Because of its long history and special architecture, St. John's Parsonage was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. This means it's recognized as a very important historical site in the United States. It's also listed on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places.
