The St. John's Lutheran Church is a church located in Evansville, Wisconsin. It is part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. This church has an interesting history that began in 1936.
Church History
The church was first started in June 1936. Back then, it was called First Lutheran. In 1938, the church bought an older building. This old building used to be an Episcopal church. It had the name "St. John's" written over its door. So, the church members decided to change their name to St. John's too!
By April 1951, the church building on First Street was getting too small. The church members needed more space. So, they started planning for a brand new building. They bought the land for the new church in 1956. Construction began in 1957. The very first service in the new church was held on June 15, 1958.
Building Design
A well-known architect named John Steinmann designed much of the 1957 church building. He was inspired by the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. This means the church has a unique and modern look for its time.
The church building is considered important because of its design. It was added to the State Register of Historic Places in 2011. This list keeps track of important historical buildings in Wisconsin. The next year, it was also added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list of places across the whole United States that are important to history.
