About St. Mark's Church

St. Mark's Church is in the southwestern part of Worcester. It is on the west side of Freeland Street, close to Main Street and Clark University.

Building Design

The church is a two-story building made of stone. It has a roof that slopes down on the sides, facing the street. The main entrance is set back in the middle, under a large round arch. The building has special decorations, like round designs on either side of the arch at the entrance. The windows are placed in an interesting, uneven way. The front part of the building holds the parish house, which is a space for church activities. The main worship area, called the sanctuary, is in a part that extends to the back.

Church History

The St. Mark's church group began in 1886. It started as a "mission" by Rev. William Huntington from All Saints Episcopal Church. All Saints was the first Episcopal church in the city. St. Mark's held its first services in 1887 in a nearby Baptist church. This was while their own building was being constructed.

The church building was finished in 1888. It was designed by a local architect named Stephen C. Earle. Some important early members of the church included James and Orlando Norcross. They were leaders of the Norcross Brothers construction company.
