History of St. Nicholas Cathedral
The first small church, called a chapel, was opened in 1895. It was started by Saint Raphael of Brooklyn. This first location was on Washington Street in an area called Little Syria, Manhattan.
Moving to Brooklyn
Saint Raphael created the Syrian Orthodox community there. In 1902, the group moved to Pacific Street in Brooklyn. Later, in 1920, the church moved again. They moved into a building on 355 State Street in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn. This building was built in 1870 and used to be an Episcopal church.
