St. Peter's Episcopal Church is a historic building in Neligh, Nebraska. It was once a church but is now a museum. You can find it at 411 L Street. This building was constructed in 1887. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 because of its special history and design.
History of St. Peter's Church
A group of people who followed the Episcopal faith started meeting in Neligh in 1881. They decided they needed their own church building. In 1887, they bought land for the church. This land was at the corner of what were then Cottonwood and Main Streets.
The church building was finished by the end of 1887. It was officially opened for services in March 1888. Many years later, in December 1980, St. Peter's Episcopal Church was recognized as an important historical site. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
Today, the building is no longer used as a church. It is now called the Pioneer Church. It is part of the Antelope County Museum complex, where visitors can learn about the area's past.
Church Design and Architecture
St. Peter's Episcopal Church is a one-story building made of wood. The lower part of its walls has vertical wood panels. Above the windows, the walls have horizontal wood siding, which are long, thin boards. The roof sections have a pointed shape, like a triangle, which is called a gable. All the windows in the church also have pointed arches at the top.
The design of St. Peter's Church was inspired by another famous church. This was the Church of St. James the Less in Philadelphia, built in 1846. The St. James church was very important because it was the first church in the United States designed with help from a group in London, England. This group was called the Cambridge Camden Society.
St. Peter's Church in Neligh is a smaller, simpler version of the St. James church. It uses wood instead of heavy stone. It also has a bell on the roof instead of a tall tower and spire. Even with these differences, St. Peter's is a great example of 19th-century American Gothic Revival style. This style uses elements from old European churches.
