St. Peter's Episcopal Church is a special old building in Neligh, Nebraska. It used to be a church, but now it's a museum! You can find it at 411 L Street. This church was built way back in 1887. It became a recognized historic place in 1980.

A Look Back: The Church's Story

A group of people who followed the Episcopal faith started meeting in Neligh in 1881. They bought land for a church building in 1887. This land was at the corner of what was then Cottonwood and Main Streets.

The church building was finished by the end of 1887. It was officially opened for services in March 1888. In December 1980, the church was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important historical site.

Today, the building is called the Pioneer Church. It is part of the Antelope County Museum.

What Does It Look Like?

St. Peter's Episcopal Church is a one-story building made of wood. The lower part of the walls has vertical wood panels that fit together tightly. Above the windows, the walls have horizontal overlapping wood planks.

The roof sections are pointed, like a triangle. All the windows have a special pointed arch shape. This style is called Gothic Revival.

The design of this church was inspired by another church. This was the Church of St. James the Less in Philadelphia, built in 1846. The St. James church was the first in the U.S. to be built with help from a group in London, England.

St. Peter's was built for a small town. So, it used wood instead of the heavy stone that the St. James church used. St. James also had strong stone supports and a tall tower. St. Peter's has a bell instead of a tower. It also has slightly different roof shapes on the ends. St. Peter's is a great example of a 19th-century American Gothic Revival building.
