Stratton's Inn is a very old house in Brookfield, Vermont. It was built a long time ago, around the late 1790s. Back then, it was a busy place called a tavern or inn. People traveling would stop there to rest.

This historic building is a great example of Federal period architecture. This means it was built in a popular style from the early days of the United States. One special part of the inn is that it still has its original "tap room." This is where drinks were served to guests. Because it's so important to history, Stratton's Inn was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

What Does Stratton's Inn Look Like?

Stratton's Inn is located in a quiet, countryside part of Brookfield. It's a two-story building made of wood. It has a special kind of roof called a hip roof. The house also has a big chimney in the middle and a stone base.

The outside walls are covered with wooden boards called clapboards. The main front door faces east and has five windows across. The door itself is decorated with thin columns called pilasters. Above the door, there's a small window and a fancy top part. There are also other doors on the south and west sides. A garage was added to the house later, in the 1900s.

Inside the Historic Inn

The inside of Stratton's Inn has a typical layout for old houses from that time. When you walk in, there's a small entry area. A winding staircase goes up from here. On either side of the central chimney, there are large rooms. The room on the north side was once a fancy living room, called a parlor. The room on the south side was the tap room. This is where the innkeeper would serve drinks to travelers. There's even a small closet near the entrance. It's thought that the innkeeper used this closet to get drinks from storage under the stairs.

History of Stratton's Inn

Stratton's Inn was probably built between 1795 and 1798. It was built by Ebenezer Stratton, who was one of the first people to settle in Brookfield. The inn was built along a very important road called Paine's Turnpike. This road was a main route for people traveling north and south.

It's even possible that a sign saying "E. Stratton's" that is now in the National Museum of American History once hung at this very inn! The inn was a popular stop for stagecoaches (horse-drawn buses) until at least 1838.

The Stratton family owned the property until 1890. For most of that time, after it stopped being a busy inn, it was used as a farm.
