Sudanese People's Liberation Army facts for kids
The Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) are important groups in South Sudan. The SPLM is a political party there. The SPLA was its armed group.
These groups started in 1963 as a movement fighting against the government. The SPLA fought in the Sudanese Civil War against the Sudanese government. This long war ended in 2005.
What They Wanted
At first, the SPLM said it wanted a new, free Sudan. This "New Sudan" would not be based on religion. But many people in the movement really wanted a separate country. They wanted an independent state called South Sudan.
Path to Independence
In 2005, a peace agreement was signed. After this, the SPLM became part of the Sudanese government. This lasted until 2011. In 2011, South Sudan became an independent country.
Since then, the SPLM has been the main political party in South Sudan. The SPLA became the official army of the new country.
SPLM and SPLA Today
Even after South Sudan became independent, the SPLM still has a role in Sudan. In some areas of Sudan, like South Kordofan and Blue Nile, the SPLA is still fighting against the Sudanese government.en:Sudan People's Liberation Army
