Tanner's Hospital, also known as Carpenter's Hospital, was a hospital building in Ely, Minnesota. It was built in 1901. At that time, many people in the area were getting sick. This was because the mining towns on the Iron Range did not have good sanitation systems. The hospital was built to help people and also to make money.

Later, from the 1950s to the 1980s, the building became apartments called "Lakeview." In 1980, Tanner's Hospital was added to the National Register of Historic Places. It was recognized for its importance in architecture, business, and health care history. It shows how health services started as private businesses before becoming a public concern.

A Hospital in a Mining Town

Tanner's Hospital opened in 1901 in Ely, Minnesota. Ely was a busy mining town. Many people worked in the mines. Life in these towns could be tough.

Why Hospitals Were Needed

In the early 1900s, mining towns often had health problems. There was not much clean water or good ways to get rid of waste. This meant diseases could spread easily. People often got sick from infections or accidents.

Early Health Care in Ely

Because so many people were getting sick, there was a need for places to treat them. Doctors and hospitals were important. Tanner's Hospital was one of the first places to offer medical care in Ely. It was built by people who saw a chance to help others and run a business.

From Hospital to Homes

After many years as a hospital, the building changed. It was no longer needed as a hospital. In the 1950s, it was turned into apartments.

The Lakeview Apartments

The building became known as the "Lakeview" apartments. Many families lived there for decades. It was a part of the community for a long time. The apartments were used until the 1980s.

A Historic Building

Tanner's Hospital is important because of its history. It shows how health care developed in mining communities. It also shows the style of buildings from that time.

National Register of Historic Places

In 1980, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list of buildings, sites, and objects that are important in American history. Being on this list helps protect historic places.

What Made It Special

The hospital was recognized for a few reasons. Its architecture, called Queen Anne, was notable. It also showed how business and health care worked together in the past. It represents a time when health care was mostly a private business.
