A Look Back at the King and Prince
The story of the King and Prince began in 1935. It started as a fun place called the King and Prince Beach Club. This club was built right by the sea. People loved to go there for dancing and to listen to big band music. Big band music was very popular back then.
After a couple of fires, the club was rebuilt. It opened again on July 2, 1941, as the King and Prince Hotel. During World War II, the hotel helped the United States Navy. It was used as a place to train sailors. It also had a special radar station. This station helped detect things in the sky.
The island resort welcomed guests again in 1947. Over the years, the hotel grew bigger. It had major updates and new parts added in 1972 and 1982. These changes made it even better for visitors.
Special Meetings and Historic Status
The King and Prince Hotel has hosted important events. In 1957, it was the location for a special meeting called the Bilderberg Meeting. This meeting brings together leaders from different areas. They discuss important global topics.
In 1996, the King and Prince Beach and Golf Resort became a member of Historic Hotels of America. This is a special group that recognizes hotels with important history. It is part of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. This trust helps protect historic places.
The hotel was also added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. This means it is officially recognized as an important historic site in the United States.
