Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Saint Theodemir was a brave Spanish monk who lived a long time ago. He is known as a martyr, which means he died for his beliefs. He is also the special patron saint of a town in Spain called Carmona. Theodemir passed away on July 25, 851, in a city called Córdoba.

Who Was Saint Theodemir?

Theodemir was born in Carmona, a town in the region of Seville, Spain. We don't know the exact year he was born. Most of what we know about him comes from a book called Memorialis Sanctorum. This book was written by Saint Eulogius of Córdoba, who lived at the same time as Theodemir. Saint Eulogius described Theodemir as a young monk from Carmona.

Life as a Monk

We don't have many details about Saint Theodemir's early life. However, we know that he eventually left his hometown of Carmona. He traveled to Córdoba, a city that was a center for religious life back then. In Córdoba, he joined the Monastery of Saint Zoilus. He became a Benedictine monk, which means he followed the rules of Saint Benedict, focusing on prayer and work.

His Faith and Sacrifice

After Theodemir arrived in Córdoba, he faced a difficult time. He was brought before a judge, known as a Qadi, because of his Christian faith. During this period, Christians sometimes faced harsh treatment for their beliefs. Theodemir was punished severely for standing strong in his faith. Sadly, he died because of these punishments. His body was laid to rest in the same monastery where he lived, the Monastery of Saint Zoilus.
