Thomas was the only son of Sir Edmund Walsingham. His father was a very important person who was in charge of the Tower of London. Thomas followed in his father's footsteps. He studied law at a place called Lincoln's Inn in 1542, which was like a special school for lawyers. When his father passed away in 1550, Thomas took over the family estates. He was later given the special title of "Sir" in 1573, meaning he was knighted.

Thomas Walsingham married a woman named Dorothy Guildford. She was the daughter of Sir John Guildford. Together, they had a large family with five sons and eight daughters.
