Tickling facts for kids
Tickling is when you lightly touch, scratch, or rub a person or animal in a way that makes them laugh. For most people, tickling feels fun and makes them happy. But some people really don't like it! Common places where people get tickled are their feet, armpits, and the sides of their stomach.
Why Is It Hard to Tickle Yourself?
Many people find it very hard, or even impossible, to tickle themselves. This happens because your brain is super smart! When you try to tickle yourself, your brain already knows what you're going to do. It expects the touch.
Your brain then "cancels out" the unexpected feeling you would get if someone else tickled you. This means you don't get the same surprising reaction or laughter. It's like your brain prepares itself, so the tickle doesn't feel as strong or funny.
Can Anyone Tickle Themselves?
Even though it's tricky, some people can tickle themselves. They often know their own ticklish spots very well. They might also use objects to help. For example, someone might use a soft piece of tissue to rub against their stomach. This can sometimes create a ticklish feeling.
