He served as governor two times:
- The first time was in 1780. He took over after Agustín de Jáuregui and before Ambrosio de Benavides.
- His second time as governor was between 1787 and 1788. He again took over from Ambrosio de Benavides and was followed by The Marquess of Osorno.
His role was to make sure the King's rules were followed and to manage the daily life of the colony.
