Who Was Ubayy ibn Ka'b?

Ubayy was born in a city called Medina, which was known as Yathrib back then. He belonged to a tribe called Banu Khazraj.

He was one of the very first people to become a Muslim. He promised to follow Muhammad even before Muhammad moved to Medina. Because of this, Ubayy became one of the Ansar. The Ansar were special helpers from Medina.

Ubayy also took part in important events like the Battle of Badr. This was a major battle in early Islamic history.

Ubayy's Important Roles

Ubayy ibn Ka'b had several key jobs for Prophet Muhammad. He worked as a scribe, which means he wrote letters for Muhammad.

He was also one of the few people who wrote down parts of the Qur'an. The Qur'an is the holy book of Islam. Ubayy even had his own copy of the Qur'an.

After Prophet Muhammad passed away, Ubayy was one of only twenty-five people known as Hafiz. A Hafiz is someone who has memorized the entire Qur'an by heart. This was a very special achievement.

Ubayy as a Trusted Advisor

Ubayy was a part of a special group that gave advice to the leaders. The first leader, called a caliph, was Abu Bakr. He often asked this group for help with difficult problems.

When Umar became the next caliph, he also asked Ubayy for advice. Ubayy was especially important for giving fatwas. A fatwa is like a legal judgment or opinion in Islamic law.

Ubayy ibn Ka'b passed away in the year 649 CE. This was during the time when Uthman was the caliph.
