About Her Life
Early Life and Education
Ursula Müller started her studies in 1963 at the Goethe University Frankfurt. She studied mathematics and physics. She earned her doctorate degree in 1967. After that, she moved to the United States. For five years, she taught mathematics at the Pennsylvania State University.
When she returned to Germany, she decided to study new subjects. From 1972 to 1979, she studied sociology, political science, and psychology at the University of Giessen. She earned a master's degree there.
Career in Women's Studies
From 1976 to 1989, Ursula Müller worked at the Social Research Centre. This center was part of the Technical University of Dortmund.
In 1989, she became a professor at Bielefeld University. She taught in the Department of Gender Studies. This made her a pioneer in this new field of study. She also became the first director of the university's Interdisciplinary Centre for Women's Studies.
Ursula Müller has written many books and articles about gender studies. This field looks at how gender affects people's lives and society. In her 2019 book, Walk on the Wild Side, she wrote about her time at the university. She retired in 2012.
Role as Secretary of State
From 1996 until her retirement in 1999, Ursula Müller also served in government. She was the Secretary of State for the Schleswig-Holstein Ministry. This ministry handled important topics like women's issues, youth, housing, and city development.
