Usinger's is a famous company that makes delicious sausages and meats. It is located in downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The company is known for its tasty products, many of which are made using old family recipes.
How It All Started
Fred Usinger was a young sausage maker from Germany. He moved to Milwaukee in the late 1870s. Fred found a job at a small butcher shop on Third Street. Mrs. Julia Gaertner owned this shop.
After about a year, Fred bought Mrs. Gaertner's business. He then married her niece, Louise. Together, Fred and Louise helped the business grow a lot. Soon, their sausages were being sent all over the country.
In 1994, Usinger's opened a new distribution center. This center helps send their products to more places. In the 1990s, Fred's great-grandchildren, Fritz and Debra Usinger, took over running the company.
What They Make
Usinger's makes many different kinds of sausages and meats. They often use traditional recipes from the 1800s. These recipes help give their products a special taste.
People have often praised Usinger's products. For example, a book from 1984 called The Book of Bests said that Usinger's hot dogs were among the best. It also mentioned that their cold cuts were very high quality. A famous food writer, Mimi Sheraton, wrote in 1973 that Usinger's was a reason she might want to move to Milwaukee!
